Would you refer to your family as a "family on mission?" Are you thinking, "What does that even mean?!" This is something that I feel very passionate about but is still very much a work in progress for our family.
It is very clear in scripture that we are to be preaching the gospel to all creation (Mark 16:15) and that we are to declare His glory and marvelous deeds to all people (Psalm 96:3). The commissioning that He has laid out for us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19) can feel very daunting!
Like how do I do that with three little kids, a husband, a house, small group, playdates, sports and on and on and on!?
I've heard one of my favorite Bible preaching authors, Jennie Allen, talk very plain and simple about this. She's expressed many times that as her kids were growing up, they just knew they were along for the ride when it came to her and her husband being on mission for Christ.
I LOVE THIS.
In this season of life it is so easy to play it safe. Josh and I talk all the time about how monotonous our life can be in this season. Did they eat? Did she sleep? How long? Did they take a bath yesterday? Strap them in. Unstrap them. Repeat.
A good word to describe me much of the time is RESTLESS. I love my kids and my family and I know that they are my main mission field. The ones God specifically gifted me to support, love, lead, and pour into. BUT it is not wrong to recognize God calling you to something outside of that.
Now that I'm becoming more in tune with God's call on my life, I'm fired up about taking my kids along on the mission. I want them to see their mom investing in people, fearlessly walking roads that feel unknown, and taking the commands of the Lord seriously.
My husband is a very private, in the box, low key kind of guy. We are total opposites in most areas. A lot of times this causes me to feel like I'm dragging him along for the ride too. I'm not saying this in a negative way but the man needs a lot of down time! Changing the world is not on his "to do" list. His rational thought processes and even keeled temperament serve our family mission well. He jokes that I'm only allowed to go change the world if I make enough money that allows him to become a stay at home dad! HAHA! He has no idea what he'd be getting himself into.
Anyways. We are still very much in the process of figuring out what this looks like for our family as a whole. We are leaning into Christ and are focusing on being available when the Holy Spirit nudges us. What's your family's mission look like? Is it happening inside your home, at your workplace, in your neighborhood? Have you pinpointed what God is calling your family to beyond just making it to bedtime at 8pm?
Grab your spouse and discuss some small and big steps that can move you forward on the mission Christ has for you.
